How to compress an image to 10 KB (or any size)

Lots of websites and forms set a strict upload limit — "photo must be under 10 KB", "signature must be under 20 KB", "image below 100 KB". A photo straight off your phone is usually 2–5 MB, which is hundreds of times too big. Here's how to bring it down to an exact size in under a minute, for free.

What "compressing" actually does

There are two levers that control an image's file size:

• Dimensions — how many pixels wide and tall the image is. A 4000×3000 photo has 12 million pixels; most forms only need something like 600×450.
• Quality (compression) — how much detail the JPEG format throws away. Lowering quality from 100% to, say, 60% is usually invisible to the eye but cuts the file size dramatically.

To hit a tiny target like 10 KB you normally need both: reduce the dimensions and lower the quality. Our tool does this automatically — you just type the target size.

Step by step

1. Open the EasyLife File Converter and choose the Compress image tab.
2. Drag in your photo (JPG, PNG or WEBP).
3. In Target size (KB) type the number you need — for example 10.
4. Pick an output format. JPG gives the smallest files and is best for photos.
5. Click Convert & download. The tool lowers quality, and shrinks the image if needed, until it reaches your target.

Which format should I choose?

• JPG — best for photographs and anything with lots of colours. Smallest size at a given quality.
• PNG — best when you need a transparent background or crisp text/logos. Larger files, so harder to squeeze very small.
• WEBP — modern format that's often 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality, if the site accepts it.

Will the quality look bad?

Getting a detailed photo all the way down to 10 KB will soften it — that's just physics, there isn't room for much detail in 10 KB. For a small thumbnail or a signature it looks fine. If you have more headroom (say 100–200 KB), the result will look essentially identical to the original. The tool always keeps the image as sharp as possible for the size you asked for.
